BOOM IN RENTING BIZ DURING CHINESE NEW YEAR
IT IS that dreaded time of the year again, when nosy family members question the singlehood status of relatives at Chinese New Year reunion dinners.

But now, instead of bracing themselves for interrogation, singles are taking matters into their own hands.

Their solution: Getting friends to pose as romantic partners, seeking help from dating agencies or even hiring social escorts to do the job.

A 29-year-old marketing executive, who wants to be known only as David, said he shuns long-term relationships, preferring to date casually. In fact, many of his dates often accompany him on Chinese New Year family visits.

He said: “I just take one of them along for these events to shut up my relatives. The next time I meet my relatives, I just tell them that we broke up.” Three out of four escort agencies told my paper that the demand for companions increases by 30 to 50 per cent during the festive season.

The owner of Singapore Model Escorts, who wants to be known only as William, said: “(Our male clients’) key concern is they don’t want girls to wear short skirts or look sexy. They should dress conservatively.

One of his social escorts, Kari, in her 20s, posed as a girlfriend of a working professional at his family reunion dinner last year. She met him only an hour before the gathering to corroborate details such as how they met and how long they had been dating. Kari, who works as a bank executive by day, said: “As we both worked at a bank, we told (his relatives) that we met at work.

In the end, she pulled off a convincing act in front of her client’s 30 relatives at a Chinese restaurant. The social escort of two years said: “They even told us that we look good together.” She was paid $1,600 for that job. Kari said: “I got paid a lot just to socialise and that’s the best I could’ve asked for. The guy wasn’t too bad looking, too.” She said she has received many professional requests to meet friends and family this festive season.

A spokesman for escort agency Vie Models said: “The booking fee is higher during this time because these escorts are mostly Chinese and would take on assignments only if the pay is very attractive.

The agency raises its rates by about 25 to 50 per cent per hour during this period. He declined to reveal actual figures.

Mr Jason Lim, owner of Metro Touch Escorts, said that a premium Singaporean social escort – typically defined as an attractive university graduate in her 20s – can earn anything from $5,000 to a whopping $20,000 for a three-hour reunion-dinner session. He added: “The cost depends on the girl, the location, the duration, how many people she has to meet at the dinner and whether she is required to drink.

There are also those who are motivated to seek help from dating agencies. At least two such agencies told my paper that they see a surge in demand at this time of the year.

Dating agency Lunch Actually sees a 15 to 20 per cent increase in demand for its services in the period leading up to Chinese New Year. Its chief executive, Ms Violet Lim, 30, said: “Chinese New Year is a time when they feel more pressured as they will be meeting family members who will probably ask them about their marital status. This makes them more open to finding out about dating opportunities and platforms.

Then, there are those who choose to skip town to avoid facing a grilling by relatives. A 24-year-old public-relations executive, who wants to be known only as Ashley, said she got a guy pal to pose as her boyfriend three years ago.

She said:“I don’t mind getting someone to pose as my boyfriend. I’ll probably have to find someone else next time but, this year, I’m getting out of town.

MY PAPER, THURSDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2010, PAGE A15, MY LIFESTYLE

'Green' is good for Edmund Chen
ACTOR Edmund Chen takes environmental issues very seriously.

So seriously, in fact, that besides cultivating habits like recycling at home and using reusable food containers for takeaway orders, he also finds his work taking on an eco-friendly spin.

But the prolific 46-year-old, who has starred in Singapore- made Mandarin television dramas like Perfect Cut 2, as well as Hollywood movie Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li last year, told my paper that going green wasn't always a priority.

"When I was first confronted with the idea of going green, it seemed like rocket science...(I thought) it was about things like fixing the ozone layer," the affable Chen said in an interview last week.

"It didn't seem like something an individual could do."

Still, his "love for nature" motivated him to find out more.

"I later realised that just small steps here and there, like putting the three Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) into practice, could make a difference in the long run," he enthused.

Now, one of his best eco-friendly habits is to "tapau" (takeaway in Cantonese) his meals using his own containers.

He packs food from eateries for about half of his meals, he revealed.

http://entertainment.xin.msn.com/en/celebrity/bios/Xiang-Yun.aspx

"The practice is not only good for the environment, but it also brings back fond childhood memories of my grandparents packing food and taking it to me in school," the father of two, who is married to actress Xiang Yun, explained.

Back then, his school canteen did not offer many food choices, he added, "so the feeling of having someone bring you wholesome, home-cooked food was great".

These days, Chen, who owns an events and public-relations firm, Asiatainment, usually packs soupy dishes like yong tau foo from his favourite hawker stalls for himself and his wife, and for his children, "anything of their choice".

His 19-year-old son, Yi Xi, is currently serving national service, while daughter Yi Xin, 10, is in primary school.

Though taking along one's own containers for takeaways is currently not a common practice in Singapore, Chen hopes that the habit will catch on one day.

"We must not think of it as unglamorous to do so," he said. "It's something I will encourage my kids to pick up later on as well."

Indeed, during this interview at VivoCity's Banquet foodcourt, the rosy-cheeked actor - who looks much younger than his age, thanks to his healthy eating habits - seemed right at home filling his bright-yellow Tupperware container with beancurd and vegetables from a yong tau foo stall.

On the career front, Chen has added "children's book author" to his resume.

His foray into publishing has resulted in five books so far. The latest, a Chinese book entitled Dino Rulez was released in September. Even that project came with a "green" message.

"It's about two siblings who stumble into a hole which takes them to the centre of the earth...a new environment where the air is fresher, the fruit are sweeter and the leaves are greener," he said.

"The message is that we need to keep our world like that...I wanted to make it very relatable to the children," he added.

Next up, he hopes to organise a series of workshops to encourage youth to learn about publishing and the international film industry.

Chen, who is also the Cleanliness Ambassador for the National Environment Agency, is working on a project with the National Parks Board, for which he will be drawing a series of Singapore plants.

His ultimate goal: To spread the word that every little morsel of environmental consciousness makes a difference.

"Just a little bit of effort can go a long way in giving us a better world," he said.

Why, with her numerous others—next to husband Edmund Chen’s collection, of course. Together, they must have enough Star Awards to pave a minor road.

BE SPOTTED

AS PART of Tupperware’s Bring Your Own (B.Y.O) TaPau Campaign, the brand will be on a hunt to spot and reward those who take along their own containers during lunch hours (between noon and 2pm) at Banquet foodcourts.

Tupperware’s Tupper-Spotter will be at the following locations to spot those who use any reusable container to pack their food:
  • Clifford Centre (Nov 18)
  • VivoCity (Nov 26)
  • Parkway Parade (Dec 3)
  • City Square Mall (Dec 10)

Those spotted will be presented with Tupperware goodies by a special celebrity guest.

Held to mark the launch of Tupperware’s latest collection, the TaPau Set, the campaign aims to encourage people to do their bit for the environment by taking along their own containers when ordering takeaways.

This would cut down on the use of disposable plastic bags and styrofoam containers, which are harmful to the environment.

Here are some facts about the TaPau Set:
  • Made from food-grade materials. Non-toxic and non-carcinogenic.
  • Does not leach chemicals into food, so safe to use and re-use for a lifetime.
  • Meets international safety standards.

The TaPau Set is available at Tupperware’s authorised outlets.

A SOTHEBY’ employee displays a rare automaton caterpillar, probably made by Henri Maillardet in 1820, during an auction press preview in Geneva, Switzerland.

Six automaton caterpillars by Maillardet are known to exist and only two of the six are studded with diamond, emeralds, rubies, and turquoise - this being one of them.

From late 18th century to early 19th century, automaton was all the rage in Europe. Renowned watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz and his son Jean-Frederic Leschot built many mechanical birds and dolls.

Maillardet spent a period of time working in Jaquet-Droz’s shop in London. His rare caterpillar will be offered on auction on Nov 16, with a pre-sale estimate of up to CHF450,000 (S$596,587).

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, although only a mere 163 ha (hectares), has over 840 different plant species, which is more than the entire of North America.

Over the past 20 years, the island has enjoyed the "garden city" reputation. The green area is growing. National Parks Board (NParks) data show that in 1986, Singapore's green coverage area is only 35.7%. In 2007, the green coverage space increased to 46.5% with the parks and nature reserves accounting for 10% of land area in Singapore.

NParks Conservation Director Tun Hua Huang interviewed by "my paper" said: When the concept of "Singapore's 'garden city' was born, can be traced back to the 60s in the last century. Then the Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's tree-planting campaign was launched. Since then with continuous efforts in the greening of Singapore, resulted with half the island today being cover by green. 莱佛士生物多样性研究博物馆副署长、新加坡国立大学生物系副教授陈长华受访时也指出,我国独立以来,城市化进程迅速,但生物却更加多样化,绿地不断增多,也常常发现新的植物和动物,这是非常难得的。
Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, Deputy Director, Department of Biology, National University of Singapore Associate Professor Chen Changhua when interviewed also pointed out that since our independence, there is rapid urbanization, but there are more living species. Increasing green space often comes with the discovery of new plants and animals. This is a very rare phenomenon.

(Singapore Index onCities’ Biodiversity
In order to protect and improve the local biological diversity, Singapore is also the first to launch last year, "Singapore Index onCities' Biodiversity".

Last week, in Nagoya, Japan, at the "10th Conference of the Convention on Biological Diversity", this index was officially adopted by 193 "Convention on Biological Diversity" members.

Chen Chang hua, said the index will help a city to monitor its biodiversity rating and to measure the performance of cities in this area; but he also warns that the city biodiversity index should be improved for the benefit of the residents, rather than to achieve a higher point for the sake of just doing it.
