MY PAPER, THURSDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2010, PAGE A15, MY LIFESTYLE

'Green' is good for Edmund Chen
ACTOR Edmund Chen takes environmental issues very seriously.

So seriously, in fact, that besides cultivating habits like recycling at home and using reusable food containers for takeaway orders, he also finds his work taking on an eco-friendly spin.

But the prolific 46-year-old, who has starred in Singapore- made Mandarin television dramas like Perfect Cut 2, as well as Hollywood movie Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li last year, told my paper that going green wasn't always a priority.

"When I was first confronted with the idea of going green, it seemed like rocket science...(I thought) it was about things like fixing the ozone layer," the affable Chen said in an interview last week.

"It didn't seem like something an individual could do."

Still, his "love for nature" motivated him to find out more.

"I later realised that just small steps here and there, like putting the three Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) into practice, could make a difference in the long run," he enthused.

Now, one of his best eco-friendly habits is to "tapau" (takeaway in Cantonese) his meals using his own containers.

He packs food from eateries for about half of his meals, he revealed.

"The practice is not only good for the environment, but it also brings back fond childhood memories of my grandparents packing food and taking it to me in school," the father of two, who is married to actress Xiang Yun, explained.

Back then, his school canteen did not offer many food choices, he added, "so the feeling of having someone bring you wholesome, home-cooked food was great".

These days, Chen, who owns an events and public-relations firm, Asiatainment, usually packs soupy dishes like yong tau foo from his favourite hawker stalls for himself and his wife, and for his children, "anything of their choice".

His 19-year-old son, Yi Xi, is currently serving national service, while daughter Yi Xin, 10, is in primary school.

Though taking along one's own containers for takeaways is currently not a common practice in Singapore, Chen hopes that the habit will catch on one day.

"We must not think of it as unglamorous to do so," he said. "It's something I will encourage my kids to pick up later on as well."

Indeed, during this interview at VivoCity's Banquet foodcourt, the rosy-cheeked actor - who looks much younger than his age, thanks to his healthy eating habits - seemed right at home filling his bright-yellow Tupperware container with beancurd and vegetables from a yong tau foo stall.

On the career front, Chen has added "children's book author" to his resume.

His foray into publishing has resulted in five books so far. The latest, a Chinese book entitled Dino Rulez was released in September. Even that project came with a "green" message.

"It's about two siblings who stumble into a hole which takes them to the centre of the earth...a new environment where the air is fresher, the fruit are sweeter and the leaves are greener," he said.

"The message is that we need to keep our world like that...I wanted to make it very relatable to the children," he added.

Next up, he hopes to organise a series of workshops to encourage youth to learn about publishing and the international film industry.

Chen, who is also the Cleanliness Ambassador for the National Environment Agency, is working on a project with the National Parks Board, for which he will be drawing a series of Singapore plants.

His ultimate goal: To spread the word that every little morsel of environmental consciousness makes a difference.

"Just a little bit of effort can go a long way in giving us a better world," he said.

PHOTO: Xiang Yun credits her Best Supporting Actress win (she shared the top spot with Ng Hui) to Lin Mei Jiao’s dagger eyes. “Only Mei Jiao’s jealousy (when she was in character) could spur my good performance,” she chuckled. “Her glare really scared me.” Where will she be displaying the trophy? Why, with her numerous others—next to husband Edmund Chen’s collection, of course. Together, they must have enough Star Awards to pave a minor road.

BE SPOTTED

AS PART of Tupperware’s Bring Your Own (B.Y.O) TaPau Campaign, the brand will be on a hunt to spot and reward those who take along their own containers during lunch hours (between noon and 2pm) at Banquet foodcourts.

Tupperware’s Tupper-Spotter will be at the following locations to spot those who use any reusable container to pack their food:
  • Clifford Centre (Nov 18)
  • VivoCity (Nov 26)
  • Parkway Parade (Dec 3)
  • City Square Mall (Dec 10)

Those spotted will be presented with Tupperware goodies by a special celebrity guest.

Held to mark the launch of Tupperware’s latest collection, the TaPau Set, the campaign aims to encourage people to do their bit for the environment by taking along their own containers when ordering takeaways.

This would cut down on the use of disposable plastic bags and styrofoam containers, which are harmful to the environment.

Here are some facts about the TaPau Set:
  • Made from food-grade materials. Non-toxic and non-carcinogenic.
  • Does not leach chemicals into food, so safe to use and re-use for a lifetime.
  • Meets international safety standards.

The TaPau Set is available at Tupperware’s authorised outlets.

武吉知马自然保护区虽然只有区区163 ha公顷,不过里面却拥有840多种不同的植物,其中的树种比整个北美洲还要多。
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, although only a mere 163 ha (hectares), has over 840 different plant species, which is more than the entire of North America.

Over the past 20 years, the island has enjoyed the "garden city" reputation. The green area is growing. National Parks Board (NParks) data show that in 1986, Singapore's green coverage area is only 35.7%. In 2007, the green coverage space increased to 46.5% with the parks and nature reserves accounting for 10% of land area in Singapore.

NParks Conservation Director Tun Hua Huang interviewed by "my paper" said: When the concept of "Singapore's 'garden city' was born, can be traced back to the 60s in the last century. Then the Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's tree-planting campaign was launched. Since then with continuous efforts in the greening of Singapore, resulted with half the island today being cover by green. 莱佛士生物多样性研究博物馆副署长、新加坡国立大学生物系副教授陈长华受访时也指出,我国独立以来,城市化进程迅速,但生物却更加多样化,绿地不断增多,也常常发现新的植物和动物,这是非常难得的。
Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, Deputy Director, Department of Biology, National University of Singapore Associate Professor Chen Changhua when interviewed also pointed out that since our independence, there is rapid urbanization, but there are more living species. Increasing green space often comes with the discovery of new plants and animals. This is a very rare phenomenon.

为了保护和改善本地生物多样化,我国也在去年率先推出新加坡城市生物多样化指数”(Singapore Index onCities’ Biodiversity
In order to protect and improve the local biological diversity, Singapore is also the first to launch last year, "Singapore Index onCities' Biodiversity".

上星期在日本名古屋(Nagoya)召开的“第10届生物多样化公约大会”上,这个指数也正式被193个生物多样化公约缔约成员采纳。
Last week, in Nagoya, Japan, at the "10th Conference of the Convention on Biological Diversity", this index was officially adopted by 193 "Convention on Biological Diversity" members.

陈长华说,这个指数能协助城市有规律地为生物多样化打分,衡量城市在这个领域的表现;不过他也提醒,城市应该为居民的利益而改善生物多样化,而不是为了取得更高分才这么做。
Chen Chang hua, said the index will help a city to monitor its biodiversity rating and to measure the performance of cities in this area; but he also warns that the city biodiversity index should be improved for the benefit of the residents, rather than to achieve a higher point for the sake of just doing it.

"After a recent workshop, we started to look actively for opportunities to manage energy through heat-recovery systems within our plants. MR KERH CHWEE PENG, 3M SINGAPORE PLANT ENGINEERING MANAGER, ON THE EENP SCHEME." MYPAPER, FRIDAY JULY 30, 2010, HOME, PAGE A4

http://business.asiaone.com/Business/News/Story/A1Story20100730-229538.html

Since April, 77 companies here have signed up to improve energy efficiency and implement energy-management practices, an encouraging start, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA).

These firms are participants of the agency’s Energy Efficiency National Partnership (EENP) scheme, which organised workshops and seminars to help the companies understand how they can improve in areas such as industrial-energy efficiency, wasteheat recovery and energy-efficiency financing.

Technology firm 3M Singapore is one company that has benefited from these workshops. Its plant engineering manager, Mr Kerh Chwee Peng, told my paper: “After a recent workshop, we started to look actively for opportunities to manage energy through heat-recovery systems within our plants.

PHOTO: http://dyconconsulting.net/SMARTGREEN08/Images/greenhomeblue.jpg
http://business.asiaone.com/Business/News/Story/A1Story20100730-229538.html

For example, we are now exploring ways to recycle the heat produced by refrigerators in our kitchens. “In addition, we were introduced to vendors and consultants through the workshop, and this will be a great help in our sourcing efforts in this area.

Indeed, the EENP scheme will prove increasingly relevant to local firms in the near future.

At the two-day National Sustainability Conference, which began at Amara Hotel yesterday, Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment and Water Resources, said that schemes such as the EENP will help firms make a smooth transition from wasting energy unwittingly, to the adoption of practices with more rigorous future demands.

She added that her ministry is preparing to introduce an Energy Conservation Act that will come into force in 2013. Under the Act, large energy users, especially those which consume more than 15 gigawatts yearly, will be required to appoint an energy manager, monitor and report their energy use to NEA, and develop and submit their energy-efficiency improvement plans annually.

PHOTO: ttp://www.treehugger.com/zeroimpct.jpg
http://www.treehugger.com/2008/05/25-week/

The EENP is also in line with the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint introduced in April last year, which aims to improve energy efficiency by 35 per cent, from levels seen in 2005. “We want to do more with less,” said Dr Khor.

For pharmaceutical and health-care company Glaxo-SmithKline (GSK) Singapore, the EENP scheme has helped it to go further down the path of energy conservation. “The EENP is aligned to our company’s belief in energy conservation,” said a spokesman for GSK.

The firm has set up an energy-monitoring system that helps it to identify areas in its office building and various processing areas that use a lot of energy. The company will then work out ways to reduce energy consumption in those areas.

Besides the EENP, the NEA also has in place initiatives like the Energy Efficiency Improvement Assistance Scheme, the Grant for Energy Efficient Technologies and the Singapore Certified Energy Manager training grant, to develop Singapore’s sustainability.

Yesterday’s conference, which attracted 130 participants, discussed various sustainable strategies for Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region.

Beneath the skin of the kiwi fruit is a bunch of surprises, as a trip to New Zealand reveals

The kiwi fruit is one of those fruits that might still be a novelty to some. Certainly its health benefits are not as well-known, some people, myself included, do not realise the kiwi fruit is incredibly rich in nutrients and antioxidants.

So when I was invited to check out Zespri kiwi fruit, the brand synonymous with quality kiwi fruit, in New Zealand, it was a chance to get up close and personal with this intriguing fruit.

Growing kiwi fruit, be it green, gold or organic, in New Zealand is big business. Introduced to the country in 1904 by Isabel Fraser, it is now marketed by Zespri International and has dug its roots far and deep both globally and within New Zealand.

One example of that is the Maori connection, best witnessed on Rangiwaea Island. A 20-minute ferry ride from Tauranga's Sebel Trinity Wharf in New Zealand's North Island, Rangiwaea consists largely of horticultural and agricultural blocks run by Maori owners, with the residents engaging in various activities such as forestry, arable farming, and of course, growing of kiwi fruit.

The fruit-growing system on Rangiwaea has a unique ownership structure - it is part of the Tauwhao Te Ngare Trust, which is responsible for ensuring the land is passed down from generation to generation and providing financial support to the island. Being an inter-generational business, the trustees and shareholders are connected to Rangiwaea via genealogy.

We had a field day picking green kiwi fruit at Western Orchards in Katikati, which is part of Zespri's supply community. As it was harvesting season, we got right down to work.

If you're looking for a good workout, picking kiwi fruit beats sweating it out in the gym, it's fast and furious from the get-go, and as many as 200 bins of kiwi fruit can be plucked daily.

It was more kiwi fruit at the dinner table as we feasted on the variety of dishes that could be made with kiwi fruit. It was amazing how versatile the kiwi fruit could be, be it appetiser, main course or dessert, the fruit made its presence felt. It was like killing two birds with one stone: You could satisfy your hunger and get your daily dose of Vitamin C.

One of my favourites was the smoked salmon crepes at the Mount Bistro restaurant in Mt Maunganui, the green kiwi fruit's tangy flavour blended perfectly with the freshness of the salmon.

Another favourite was the grilled loin of Hawke's Bay Lamb with chimichurri, sweet corn puree and kiwi fruit chutney that I had at the Cable Bay restaurant on Waiheke Island. Apart from being a natural meat tenderiser, the kiwi fruit really helped to bring out the flavours of the lamb.

For those with a sweet tooth, the gold kiwi fruit crème brulee of Mount Bistro is a must-try. Kiwi fruit mint dressing - which I tried at the Matahui Lodge in Katikati, was also the perfect complement for pasta and avocado cream rice salad.

It's hard not to view the kiwi fruit in a new light after all this. Tasty, versatile and nutritionally dense, it has made me rethink my approach to healthy living. For a fruit that's barely the size of your palm, that's no mean feat.

A Kiwi a day

About the size of a large hen's egg, the kiwi fruit is a tiny bundle of surprises. Here's what you'll be getting when you bite into the fruit.

  • Vitamins C, E and a small amount of A. The kiwi fruit outstrips the orange in terms of Vitamin C content. Recent studies have shown that Zespri's gold kiwi fruit packs in a 105.4mg of Vitamin C per 100g of edible flesh, with its green counterpart coming in a close second at 92.7mg (the orange is fifth at 53.2g). Vitamin C is essential for the healthy functioning of the immune system, and an adequate intake may help reduce the severity of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and diabetic heart disease. Vitamin E also helps lower cholesterol, boost immunity and keep the skin supple.

  • The fruit's antioxidant properties also protect the body's cells from oxidative damage, thereby preventing the mutation of genes. Kiwi fruit has also been found to improve the body's uptake of iron from iron-fortified food, which is especially important for people suffering from iron deficiency. It also contains potassium, magnesium and folate, which are important for good health.

  • If you've ever had that bloated feeling after a high-protein meal or have digestive problems, eating kiwi fruit could help ease the discomfort, as kiwi fruit is rich in actinidin, a protein-dissolving enzyme. Kiwi fruit also serves as a natural blood thinner, and studies have shown that eating two or three a day significantly reduces the risk of blood clots.

  • Kiwi skin is edible and is a rich source of dietary fibre. Much of the vitamin content is stored under the skin, so don't peel the kiwi fruit when you eat it or you'll lose some of those precious nutrients. Fibre is good for lowering the risk of colon cancer and keeping blood sugar levels under control. Kiwi fruit seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.
