UNUSUALLY large numbers of people are falling ill with sore throats, the common cold, fever and diarrhoea.

Last week, polyclinics saw more than 20,000 patients with such problems – an indication that the numbers have passed the epidemic threshold and the illnesses are now spreading rapidly in the community.

Polyclinics see roughly 20 per cent of primary-care patients, so the Ministry of Health (MOH) uses their patient numbers to gauge the level of infectious illnesses in the country.

When the numbers at the polyclinics top 17,032 cases a week in the case of acute respiratory infections (ARI), it is severe enough to be classified as an epidemic.

Last week, 18,377 patients turned up at polyclinics with ARI, a term used to cover a range of viral infections, such as the common cold, influenza, bronchitis and pneumonia.

This is almost 1,000 more cases a day than the norm. In fact, the number of such patients at the polyclinics jumped from 2,842 a day the previous week to 3,341 a day last week.

http://joannesfamilytraditions.blogspot.com/

While January is an annual peak season for respiratory infections, the number this year is about 10 per cent more than that in the same period last year.

MOH figures show that only about 1 per cent of patients with ARI had influenza. Among flu patients, four in five had the mild, 2009 pandemic H1N1 bug.

An MOH spokesman said: “While most people recover with rest and treatment, influenza can result in pneumonia requiring hospitalisation or even lead to death. Very young children, the elderly and patients with chronic illnesses should vaccinate against the flu every year.”

According to the MOH, polyclinics saw 2,833 diarrhoea cases last week, slightly over the 2,696 epidemic threshold. But the spokesman said MOH has “not identified any large outbreak or other contributing factors for the increased incidence of diarrhoeal illnesses”.

Can colours affect your mood?

As you look at the "restful" colours in the picture accompanying this story, you may feel stress ebbing away. Your breathing starts to improve and your tensed, hunched up shoulders relax.

On the contrary, you may find yourself getting irritated and fatigued, if you are surrounded by too many bright colours such as yellow and red. Or so proponents of colour psychology claim.

Art therapist Esther Ann, from National University Hospital's department of rehabilitation, is no stranger to colours and its emotional effects. In the field of art therapy, colour is thought to be closely related to a person's emotion.

"Colours may alter moods, influence behaviour and may even cause physical reactions such as raising one's blood pressure or suppressing one's appetite," said Ms Ann.

Mr Jeremy Rowe, managing director of AzkoNobel Decorative Paints in South East Asia and Pacific, the manufacturer of Dulux, cited an example.

"For instance, studies have shown that looking at red can increase heart rate, prompt the release of adrenaline into the blood stream and raise blood pressure," said Mr Rowe.

According to Dr Adrian Wang, consultant psychiatrist at Gleneagles Medical Centre, a person's mood is affected by small cues in the day that can have "a knock-on effect" on how he feels and thinks.

"Such cues include light and colour. It's not uncommon to feel gloomy during a dark, cloudy day. So - yes - colours, or rather our perception of colours, can affect how we feel. The colour of the room, or a person's clothes, can influence one's feelings in subtle ways," he said.

Explaining why colours can affect a person's emotions, Ms Ann said: "Attached to the human brain are pineal glands, which control the daily rhythms of life. When light enters through the eyes or skin, it travels along neurological pathways to these glands. Different colours give off different wavelength frequencies which can have varying effects on us."

Not just a matter of aesthetics
Which is why if you're thinking of giving your walls a fresh coat of paint before the Lunar New Year, what colours you choose can impact your emotional wellbeing.

Although there is "no solid proof" and it may not necessarily work for everyone, certain hues may be more suitable than others for certain areas in your home.

Here's a colour-by-colour checklist by the experts, and their potential effects on one's mood.

Use green and blue, to achieve a serene, calming effect
According to Mr Rowe, most people tend to associate tranquillity, calmness and relaxation with these "restful colours".

He added that since the eye focuses green exactly on the retina, it is considered the most restful colour on the muscles of the eye.

"Blue is recommended for frequently-used rooms because it is supposed to be a soothing and relaxing colour. According to American art historian, Faber Birren, who wrote numerous books on colour theory, blue can apparently promote oxidation in the tissues, lower blood pressure and decrease respiration," said Mr Rowe.

Use these colours in rooms such as the study room or library, where "a cool head" is needed for mental tasks. They are also good for the bedroom, where you go to relax.

Use orange and yellow to achieve an invigorating effect, or to whet the appetite
It is believed that the colours, orange and yellow, are often associated with food and can stimulate the appetite. No brownie points for figuring out why many restaurants and food advertisements use these citrusy colours.

However, be careful where you use these bright colours in your home. Ms Ann said such colours reflect more light and can excessively stimulate the eyes, causing irritation and fatigue.

Use these colours in the kitchen and dining room - don't you want your guests to slurp up your food? But you may want to steer clear of these colours if you're on a diet.

Use purple to get your creative juices flowing
According to Mr Rowe, purple embodies a balance of stimulating red and calm blue.

"For this reason, purple is said to be uplifting, often offering a sense of spirituality and encouraging creativity. A lighter shade of purple is believed to provide a peaceful environment and relieve tension," he said.

What about very dark colours such as black or grey?

While dark colours may evoke negative emotions, Mr Rowe, who sees more requests from clients for darker neutrals such as grey and dark brown, said that that using slightly darker hues may "evoke a warmer and cosier feel".

While sticking to "positive" colours may help uplift the spirits, Dr Wang said relying on colours alone will not help a person suffering from severe depression.

Mr Rowe also added that ultimately, the perception of different colours can vary from person to person, based on cultural and family influences, as well as one's personal experience.

"How we perceive colour is also influenced by the intensity and lightness (light reflectance value) of the hue, as well as where it is placed. So in the end, it is quite subjective and personal," he said.

So who's to say you're mad, if grey makes you happy?

If you are planning to overindulge this festive season, then it would be a good idea to stock up on bread and honey as well as booze.

Scientists claim that the natural sweetener is a great way to help the body deal with the toxic effects of a hangover.

The Royal Society of Chemistry claim that the fructose in the honey is essential to help the body break down alcohol into harmless by-products.

PHOTO: Hangover helper!
Having a piece of toast covered in honey the day after a rough party night can help get rid of the side-effects of a night of drinking. Honey is largely made up of fructose, which speeds up the metabolism of alcohol.

http://x9a.xanga.com/3aef35eb14d32236725780/z187059712.jpg
http://www.healthkicker.com/695906385/bad-hangover-reach-for-some-honey/

The reason why hangovers are so painful is that alcohol is first broken down into acetaldehyde, a substance which is toxic to the body, claimed Dr John Emsley of the Royal Society.

This is then converted - using fructose - into acetic acid which is then burned during the body's normal metabolic process and broken down into carbon dioxide, which is breathed out of the body.

PHOTO: Serving the honey on toast adds potassium and sodium to the meal which is also helps the body cope with the alcohol.

Serving the honey on toast adds potassium and sodium to the meal which is also helps the body cope with the alcohol.

Dr Emsley said: "The happiness comes from alcohol. The hangover comes from acetaldehyde. This is the toxic chemical into which alcohol is converted by the body and it causes a throbbing headache, nausea, and maybe even vomiting.

"The hangover disappears as the acetaldehyde is slowly converted to less toxic chemicals."

Dr Emsley, author of the Consumer's Good Chemical Guide, said that the time was the greatest healer of a hangover but there were also ways to minimise it.

http://donthavekids.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/hangover2.jpg
http://www.kissing-frogs.net/2009/06/feels-like-first-time.html

He said that drinking a glass of milk first, sticking to clear alcohols such as gin and mixing in the occasional soft drink were helpful as was sinking a pint of water before you go to bed.

He said: "The milk slows down the absorption of alcohol, which means there is less acetaldehyde for the body to deal with at any one time.

"Gin is alcohol twice purified by distillation and the botanical flavours it contains are mere traces. Avoid dark coloured drinks which contain natural chemicals that can adversely affect you.

"Alcohol increases water loss, hence the frequent trips to the loo. This dehydration makes a hangover worse, so moderate your drinking with a soft drink now and again, and drink a large glass of water before you go to sleep."

He said that the traditional "hair of the dog" only worked if you have drank so much alcohol you suffer withdrawal symptoms, which suggests you are becoming addicted.

How To Eat Fruit

We all think eating fruits means simply buying fruit, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. You will benefit much more if you know how and when to eat.

PHOTO: http://www.globalhealthandfitness.com/how%20to3.gif
http://www.globalhealthandfitness.com/how%20to%20eat%20fruit.htm

Fruits should be eaten on an empty stomach…not as dessert after your meal as it is often done. If you eat fruit like this, it will also help to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

PHOTO: http://www.globalhealthandfitness.com/how%20to4.gif
http://www.globalhealthandfitness.com/how%20to%20eat%20fruit.htm

Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit.

As fruit digests faster than bread, the slice of fruit digests quickly and is ready to go straight through your stomach into your intestines, but its passage is blocked by the bread which takes longer to digest…In the meantime the whole meal ferments and turns to acid.

Consequently, when the fruit comes into contact with the food in your stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

So it is better to eat your fruit on an empty stomach or before your meals!

You have heard people complaining – Every time I eat water-melon after dinner I burp. When I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet etc – Actually all this will not happen if you eat your fruit on an empty stomach.

The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under your eyes…all these will not happen if you eat your fruit on an empty stomach.

It is incorrectly presumed that some fruits like oranges and lemons are acidic and will enhance acidity in your stomach.

Research however shows that all fruits become alkaline in your body.

When you need to drink fruit juice – drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste.

Cooking fruit destroys all the vitamins.

Eating the pulp or whole fruit is far better than drinking the juices. Fiber is good for you.

If you drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it.

A 3-day “fruit fast” is a very simple and effective way to cleanse and de-toxify your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

During the “fruit fast” you can eat different fruits at different times, although occasionally mixed fruit salad would also be permissible and more interesting.

If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

I know you want to get in shape and look great. Whatever your fitness goal…to slim down... gain muscle... tone your arms or flatten your tummy I’m here to help you accomplish your goals and to improve your fitness level. You will learn how to select and combine your diet with exercise, so that you can be the best you can be.
